Why We Do What We Do
People often ask us what motivates us and why we have spent the last many years operating in challenging environments that bring constant challenge and where we are often battling against certain forces that prevent change from happening. We could certainly have chosen an easier life than the one we did ... but these questions are important. In our mind, there a number of reasons why we do what we do.
Firstly, it's the unique opportunity to help shape businesses that have the potential to scale, provide infrastructure to support the growth of industry, create job opportunities and value for all stakeholders as well as delivering substantial impact to the relevant communities in which the business operates. Such investments make a tangible and genuine difference to peoples' lives.
It's also the chance to prove that we can overcome the skeptics and experts who say 'it cannot be done'. Our mindset is not constrained by thinking and paths that have been (often unsuccessfully) followed by others before but by an attitude that "In the beginner's mind, there are many possibilities but in the expert's mind there are few" (Shunryu Suzuki, 'Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind'). Without that philosophy, we would struggle to take risks and progress.
It's also hugely rewarding to bring bright, hardworking and incredibly decent people who have the same sense of purpose on the same journey with us and give them the opportunity to live that purpose on an everyday basis. Aligning the individual's sense of purpose with that the company is the core to the success of Amaya's investments because ultimately it is the management, with strong support from patient capital, who will be the drivers of the success of the business.
And finally, we only choose projects that we love to get involved in, where we get great fulfillment and can have fun at the same time.
